Public Policy Internship

The National MS Society seeks a bright, motivated and hard-working undergraduate or graduate student who is passionate about making an impact for people living with multiple sclerosis. The public policy intern will be charged with assisting the advocacy staff from NJ with implementing its strategic goals, identifying key legislative champions and will design a time limited project (in collaboration with the staff) to have completed by the end of the academic year. By the completion of the internship, the student will have gained experience in delivering a tailored educational program.

Key functions include:

  • Learning about multiple sclerosis and developing an understanding of the multifaceted impact the disease can have on a person, his or her family, and community
  • Track and identify potential legislation, including legislation focused on Society Unified Agenda items.
  • Researching and identifying key legislators for strategic relationship building
  • Identify, recruit and train key volunteer leaders
  • Identify and maintain content for website
  • Assist in the creation of policy papers on key legislation

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate/graduate student studying Public Policy and/or Government Affairs
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (preferably 2010)
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work independently
  • Excellent organization with careful attention to detail

Training:

  • Society and chapter orientation includes education on the organization and multiple sclerosis
  • An overview of basic office equipment and systems
  • Ongoing feedback and additional training provided as needed by chapter staff internship preceptor

Commitment:

  • At least 15- 20 hours/week (office hours Mon. ā€“ Fri. 9am ā€“ 5pm)
  • Schedule is tailored to fit availability of the best applicant
